A small forest fire broke out on the Southampton Common today late in the afternoon.
Spectators looked on as fire-fighters tackled the blaze located at the edge of one of the commons large open fields.
The fire, which is suspected to have been started by a disposable barbecue, could be seen from across the common where many families were enjoying the sunshine on the UK’s hottest day of the year so far.
Other groups of people could be seen enjoying their own barbecues only a little further down the field.
The smoke and flames attracted a small crowd of people who stood taking pictures on their smartphones as they tried to get a closer look at what was happening. The Hampshire Fire and Rescue service sent three vehicles to tackle the blaze which quickly spread across the woodland.
So far there have been no reports of any casualties relating to the fire, which took the fire team about an hour to put out.
Although this was a minor incident, it is a strong reminder of just how dangerous an open flame can be in an area like Southampton Common including things like disposable barbecues, even cigarette buds not properly put out could start a blaze if thrown into the wrong area.
No statement from the Hampshire Fire and Rescue service has been released yet stating the official cause of the fire.
