Protest fail alert: a member of racist anti-immigration group English Defence League decided to film himself burning an EU flag last month, to protest what he called a “corrupt to the core” institution that is “here to take away our nationality, our identity, our free speech and our sovereignty.”
They’re also here, it would seem, to give us very effective fire regulations.
In the video, a man wearing a balaclava and gloves attempts several times to burn the flag, which is symbolic of European unity, and – as it turns out – very difficult to set fire to.
EU regulations for fire retardation mean that many household objects now have to be made from fire-resistant materials – the flag in question falls into the same category. The regulation has led to about 30% less house fires in the UK in recent years.
Instead of persuading people to leave the EU, the video gives a nice, well-rounded, ironic message – albeit, maybe not the one intended.
